Do you love coffee (like, can’t-function-without-it love it)? Do you enjoy well-designed, comfy spaces? Do you get inspired by local art and eclectic music? We will no longer only be roasting your coffee… we will be brewing it for you too!
With the news breaking that we will be opening our cafe in Lansing’s Old Town in the next few months, we’ve been getting a lot of questions! While we want to keep a few secrets, we also want you to enjoy the journey with us! Here’s the inside scoop on the cafe that will soon become your favorite spot to hang out. As always, express your excitement on social by sharing and using our hashtag #KnowYourRoaster!
What is the vision behind the cafe?
Our goal is to create a community and culture of craft coffee lovers in Lansing. We have been working toward that since we started roasting coffee in Old Town in September 2014. The cafe provides the opportunity to create that culture and community on a broader level.
While our emphasis is on creating the best craft coffee, we hope that people think of this space as their second home. We are designing it to be comfortable, welcoming, and inspiring. We want you to come put your feet up and stay awhile. Another neat feature is that we are going to bring in local artists and musicians to showcase their work. We are also hoping to host poetry slams and short story nights.
We feel as though coffee is our art and creative expression. Bloom Coffee Roasters will be a hub for all artists in the Lansing area to spread the word of their craft. And of course, if you’re not an artist, that’s okay too! We just hope you will enjoy our creative space and unwind in the environment we have created!
Why a cafe in Lansing’s Old Town ?
Old Town is an incredible, supportive, and creative part of Lansing that is continually gaining popularity and awareness. When we decided to start Bloom Coffee Roasters in Lansing, Old Town was at the top of our list for locations. We wanted to be a part of the positive growth the area was experiencing.
Our company philosophy is about growth and learning. We are working to create an environment in which our community can grow and learn together. That being said, as a new company, we needed a place that held the perfect balance between giving support and needing support. Old Town, at the time, had that perfect balance where we could receive support from the businesses and the community that were already there, while adding to the growth by participating in the events and culture in Old Town.
What kind of coffee drinks will be served?
We're going to be offering Pour-Over coffee using the entire selection of beans that we carry. (You’ve never had coffee this fresh!) We will also offer Lattes, Cappuccinos, Americanos, and Mochas, all with a basic selection of flavors. We'll be offering a Cascara Tea which is a loose leaf tea made with the processed skin of the coffee cherry. With the Cascara Tea, we've also put together a recipe for a Cascara Soda! It’s unlike anything you’ve tried before.
What kind of food will be offered?
We're still in the process of sourcing our food because we want to make sure we have the best pairings for our coffee! So far, we've decided to offer donuts from Groovy Donuts (their cake donuts are out of this world!) and pastries from the Blue Button Bakery (cupcakes and cookies anyone?!). Both shops are located nearby in Williamston - we’re excited to support other small businesses in the area! And let’s be honest… What’s better than a donut or pastry and a steaming cup of coffee?!
What will the cafe be like?
As we’ve said before, we want our cafe to be a comfortable and inviting place you love to come to. We’re all about slowing down and enjoying the moment. We think every cup of coffee should be savored, not slammed. We want you to feel absolutely welcome here and to enjoy your surroundings. Come do your homework, have a meeting with a client, or come read a book. Whatever your style/need, this is a place where you can get your caffeine buzz and do your thing.
We are having so much fun designing this space! The decor will be a perfect balance of rustic and modern. Again, the emphasis is on art, so there will be a plethora of art on the walls. We'll have some indoor plants here as well.
We'd like to have a nice balance of music to create the perfect ambiance. We are pumped to have a record player to add some character, but also plan to use our favorite spotify playlists. Rest assured, there will be plenty of weirdness played on the record player, but the majority of music in the cafe will be nice, calming cafe folk music and some classic rock.
What makes this cafe different from the others around town?
The biggest difference from other cafes is our coffee. All of the coffee we serve will be freshly roasted, in house. All of our beans are roasted to bring out the delicate nuances and subtle flavors. This means that customers will enjoy the freshest, highest quality cup that's available to Lansing, in our cafe.
It's important to us that our customers understand why drinking coffee is a more enjoyable experience when it's fresh and craft roasted. Because it's so important to us, we want to educate those who come into our cafe about the science and art of coffee roasting and coffee brewing, as well as the intricacies of tasting coffee. We hope to host coffee brewing and roasting classes. We want you to be as excited about the process as we are! (And yes, if you just want a cup of coffee without the side of education, we will let you drink your coffee in peace! ;))
When will you be opening?
We're working to put a solid opening day on the books right now, but there are still some finer details that are keeping us from doing that. Great things take time, and the best things take even more time. We want to make this a really special place. That being said, we're working extremely hard to get open soon. And once we have a date set, we will be sure to let you know!
Are you hiring?
We are not currently hiring, as we went through the hiring process in February. We've hired five fantastic baristas to help out in the cafe. We hope to be re-opening the hiring process soon after the cafe opens.
How can I get involved?
If you want to support us, you can continue to shop for our beans at Old Town General Store, Foods For Living, Monticello's and Whole Foods- East Lansing. Spread the word on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram (using #KnowYourRoaster). If you're walking by our space in Old Town, take a picture of the decals and share on social media. We're announcing a social media contest soon, and the winner could be getting some free coffee. And of course, when we open, bring all of your friends and visit us!
